In professional stock car racing, visual acuity directly dictates a driver’s reaction time. Competing across the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series and the ARCA Menards Series West, Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) fields high-caliber drivers who fight for position in tight packs where a tenth of a second decides the win.

Drafting closely behind rivals means the front of the vehicle is pelted with high-speed rubber marbles, concrete dust, and oily exhaust spray. At night, these abrasive hits turn untreated Lexan into a scarred surface that scatters overhead track lighting into blinding glare.

The Problem

Lexan windshields are built for driver impact protection, but the plastic scratches easily under heavy track debris. When high-powered stadium track lights hit fine scratches, pitted spots, and oil streaks, drivers get hit with severe light refraction and haloing. This visual distortion causes eyestrain, makes it harder to spot moving track seams or spinning cars ahead, and slows down crucial reaction speed. Swapping heavy Lexan panels between heat stages is out of the question, making surface maintenance a critical challenge on race weekends.

Solution

For their Toyota Tundra race trucks and Menards ARCA West Toyota Camry racecars, BMR installed custom-cut TearOff Products laminated optical film stacks. Crews applied 4-layer stacks across the main windshields along with 2-layer configurations on side and rear windows. Because the multi-layer film is factory-laminated, it eliminates the boundary air gaps that cause light distortion, maintaining 100% optical clarity under intense lighting. The low surface tension coating sheds rubber clods, fuel residue, and concrete dust, letting pit crews wipe windows clean during stops. When surface debris builds up, peeling the outer tab gives the driver a pristine view in two seconds.
