U.S. Naval Research Lab: Protecting Clear Lexan Observation Hulls

Conducting critical underwater observation requires clear visibility beneath your feet. Here is how the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory used 4-layer Lexan hull protective film to stop gear scratches and deck shoe scuffs on a clear observation vessel.

When researchers at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory conduct underwater operations, crystal-clear optical sightlines make all the difference. Using a specialized observation vessel featuring a fully transparent Lexan hull, scientists and naval personnel can study marine environments, benthic habitats, and subsea structures directly through the bottom of the boat.

While clear Lexan provides the structural strength needed to handle open-water loads, the interior deck floor takes constant punishment. Daily missions require personnel moving about in deck shoes, sliding heavy pelican cases and equipment packs, and setting down metal tools directly on the clear hull.

The Problem

Polycarbonate is a tough material, but its surface is soft and scratches easily under routine crew activity. Ground-in salt grit, hard-soled deck shoes, and dragged equipment cases quickly leave cloudy scuff patches and deep friction scratches across the interior floor. Once marred, the plastic scatters light, turning clear water into a blurry view that interferes with high-definition underwater cameras and visual tracking. Cleaning Lexan is notoriously tricky—standard chemical window cleaners cause permanent hazing, and while soap and water clean off surface grime, they cannot remove scratches. Replacing or repolishing a custom-molded marine hull takes months in drydock and racks up major refit expenses.

Solution

The research team installed our 4-layer, 4-mil thick protective film stack across the high-traffic interior floor areas of the Lexan hull. The optical-grade sacrificial sheets take all the daily scraping from footwear, gear cases, and dropped hand tools so the hull underneath stays untouched. With a scratch-resistant hardcoat surface, crew members can easily wipe the floor clean with standard marine cleaners without scratching the film. When heavy field operations eventually scuff the top layer, researchers simply pull the corner tab—peeling off the worn sheet in two seconds to restore clear underwater visibility.

Results

  • Preserves Clear Hulls: Keeps custom-molded Lexan boat hulls completely free from shoe scuffs and tool gouges.
  • 100% Optical Acuity: Delivers complete optical clarity so research staff and subsea cameras maintain an undistorted view.
  • 2-Second Surface Reset: Peeling away a scarred layer instantly renews the observation deck between research missions.
  • Simple Maintenance: Chemical-resistant coating handles routine washdowns without clouding or requiring harsh polishing compounds.
