Softball-Sized Granite Strike: How Multi-Layer Cab Film Prevented Operator Injury
When heavy rock excavation blasted a softball-sized chunk of granite directly into an excavator windshield, a newly installed 4-layer protective stack absorbed the blunt impact, captured shattering glass shards, and shielded the operator from catastrophic injury.
During aggressive mechanical demolition and hardrock quarrying, equipment operators face constant danger from high-velocity projectile strikes. An excavation contractor was actively chipping out dense granite bedrock when a fractured rock chunk the size of a softball suddenly broke loose under hydraulic breaker pressure, rocketing directly into the operator’s cab windshield.
Just twenty-four hours before the strike, the contractor had outfitted the excavator’s OEM front glass with a 4-layer pre-laminated protective stack. The impact fractured the underlying safety glazing across the strike zone, but the high-tensile multi-ply barrier took the direct force of the blow, maintaining full containment without blowing inward.
The Problem
High-energy rock roost and flying ballast create severe safety liabilities across civil construction and mining jobsites. Standard tempered or laminated OEM cab glass frequently spiderwebs, fractures, or completely collapses inward when struck by dense, high-mass rock fragments. Without a high-tensile sacrificial barrier, shattering glass shards and heavy stone projectiles penetrate the cab envelope, exposing operators to severe, life-threatening injuries and pulling primary production assets off the jobsite.
Solution
